Schmidt in ‘Washington Times’ on Pushback against NFL Owner
Aug 27, 2020St. Louis Partner Chris Schmidt was quoted Aug. 26 by The Washington Times regarding the growing pushback against Washington Football Team owner Dan Snyder, accused by more than 100 current and former employees of creating a workplace in which women were “marginalized, discriminated against and exploited.” Schmidt, a co-leader of BCLP’s Sports & Entertainment Litigation Practice, said while the NFL has the power to force Snyder to sell under Section 8.13 of the NFL’s bylaws if Snyder is found “guilty of conduct detrimental to the welfare of the league or professional football” that provision has never been used to force the sale of a team. “In order for the NFL to invoke this clause, they would likely need to find some evidence that Snyder was directly complicit in creating a culture that fostered sexual harassment,” Schmidt said. “Even there, I think they’d be pretty reticent to go down the path of forcing a sale.”
