Kansas City Partner James Pryde was quoted Jan. 13 by Utility Dive as part of an examination of 10 power sector trends to watch in 2021. A new administration in the White House indicates the year could look different for policymakers, utilities and other businesses. One area of the country sure to be under scrutiny is California, where stakeholders will monitor how California prepares its grid for this summer, after last year’s heat wave and weak resource adequacy margins triggered rolling blackouts. Industry observers say how the issue of resource adequacy is addressed will be essential in creating a path for other states and grid operators as they shift toward more variable generation resources. “It puts California in the spotlight,” said Pryde, who is a member of BCLP’s the Energy & National Resources Group.
