Kansas City Associate Mollie Harmon was quoted March 31 by KCUR 89.3 FM, Kansas City’s public radio station, regarding whether landlords can evict renters unable to pay their rent due to pandemic-related financial hardship. Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly on March 17 ordered financial institutions to suspend legal proceedings, and on March 23 explicitly suspended apartment evictions. Harmon said that Kelly’s order doesn’t excuse tenants from making their rental payments. It just means tenants can’t be evicted for now. “And the order also doesn’t mean that in the future you won’t owe the rent that you were unable to pay,” Harmon added.
