San Francisco Partner Rachel Matteo-Boehm was quoted Jan. 17 by Law360 concerning the Ninth Circuit’s recent ruling that news organizations have a First Amendment right to timely access to newly filed civil complaints. The ruling is the latest in a long-running dispute between firm client Courthouse News Service and California’s Ventura County Superior Court over access to new complaints. Courthouse News sued to challenge a Ventura County policy that refused to make new complaints publicly available until they were fully processed by court officials. Matteo-Boehm called the decision “a win for news organizations everywhere, and for the public,” saying “Courthouse News deserves credit for staying the course over the nine years of litigation that led to this decision – an exceptional investment in vindicating the right of public access.” BCLP’s Courthouse News team over the course of this nine-year matter included Matteo-Boehm and Partners Roger Myers, John Amberg and Jon Fetterly, Counsel Katherine Keating, and Associates Nancy Franco and Sarah Burwick. Former BCLP Counsel David Greene and former Associate Leila Knox also worked on the case.
