BCLP Senior Policy Advisor Russ Carnahan was featured May 27 in The Missouri Times as the U.S. Senate considered forming a commission to examine the Jan. 6 insurrection, when supporters of former President Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol. Former Democratic Congressman Carnahan and former Republican Congressman Tom Coleman joined together in a unanimous message urging support for a commission. “It’s something that is significant in our national history. It really deserves proper attention and structure to break through so much of the partisan clutter around it and really get to the bottom of it so we know what happened, and we can take the proper steps to see that this never happens again and history records it accurately for what it was,” Carnahan told the publication. Carnahan and Coleman also jointly penned an op-ed piece in The Kansas City Star on May 26 urging the Senate to approve a Jan. 6 Capitol commission, which the Senate ultimately rejected in a vote May 28.
