BCLP plays key role in launching historic Stonewall project
Jun 27, 2024BCLP was quoted in ABA Journal regarding it’s partnership with Pride Live , a non-profit organization elevating awareness and support for the LGBTQ+ community, to establish the Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center in New York City. The grand opening coincides with the 55th anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion and represents the culmination of thousands of pro bono hours contributed by BCLP lawyers, as well as a six-year journey for Pride Live co-founder and CEO Diana Rodriguez. This center, the first LGBTQ+ visitor center within the National Park Service, commemorates the Stonewall Riots of 1969, a pivotal event in the LGBTQ+ movement. The center will open to the public on June 28.
In 2016, President Barack Obama designated the inn, Christopher Park, and the surrounding streets and sidewalks as the Stonewall National Monument. Designated to serve as an educational resource on LGBTQ+ history and culture, the visitor center will offer free admission and educational tours led by National Park Service rangers.
“The project is a significant way to educate, change minds and build coalitions to help people understand the importance of LGBTQ+ rights issues,” said BCLP Partner James P. Colgate. “We wanted to help with this project to create a venue that ensures that future generations remember the Stonewall Rebellion as the beginning of the modern LGBTQ+ equality movement.”
