BCLP Partner Kurt Ma was quoted July 22 in Agenda (subscription required) on M&A in the video games sector. Research shows that the first half of 2022 significantly outpaced the first half of 2020 and 2019 in terms of total volume of M&A deals, with one of the key drivers being M&A in the Entertainment & Technology sector – particularly video games companies. “During the pandemic investors accumulated a “massive war chest” and now we’re seeing the deployment of that war chest,” said Kurt. Because of its unique qualities the video gaming industry tends to get a lot of media attention, he noted. “Gaming is attractive because it’s an incubator for new technology….. such incubation may happen less in other tech industries where you don’t have a ready and willing community of users that will test various aspects or technological elements for free,” said Kurt.
